A pianist, twenty sonatas, and a composer who deserves it
English pianist Xander Benham has embarked on an ambitious project to record all twenty piano sonatas of Nikolai Kapustin, a composer celebrated for blending the sophistication of classical forms with the vitality of jazz. The series begins with Sonata No. 1, Op. 39 (“Sonata-Fantasy”), a work Benham spent over two years preparing. Through this landmark recording project, he aims to bring greater recognition to one of the most distinctive and underappreciated voices of twentieth-century music.
